Fire Inspection Requirements in Texas

The Texas State Fire Marshal's Office, operating under the Texas Department of Insurance, oversees fire protection system regulation, licensing, and enforcement throughout Texas. The SFMO manages the Fire Alarm, Fire Sprinkler, and Fire Extinguisher licensing programs and is responsible for fire code enforcement in areas without local fire marshals.

Licensing Requirements

Texas requires separate licenses for fire alarm, fire sprinkler, and fire extinguisher contractors, issued by the State Fire Marshal's Office under the Texas Department of Insurance. Fire alarm contractors must hold a Registered Firm license with a Registered Planning Superintendent (RPS) on staff. Fire sprinkler contractors need a Responsible Managing Employee (RME) with appropriate qualifications. Fire extinguisher dealers must be licensed by the SFMO. Texas recognizes NICET certification and many AHJs require it for inspection personnel. All licensed firms must maintain required insurance coverage and bond.

Inspection Frequency Requirements

Texas follows NFPA standards for fire protection system inspection frequencies. Fire sprinkler systems require quarterly visual inspections and annual flow tests per NFPA 25. Fire alarm systems require annual inspection and testing per NFPA 72. Kitchen hood suppression systems require semi-annual inspection per NFPA 17A/96. Fire extinguishers require annual inspection per NFPA 10. Texas law requires that inspection reports be filed with the State Fire Marshal's Office for certain system types. The large geographic area of Texas and varying climate zones (coastal humidity in Houston, dry heat in West Texas) can affect inspection considerations.
