Licensing Requirements

Fire protection companies operating in Washington must obtain appropriate state contractor licenses. This typically includes separate license categories for fire sprinkler contractors, fire alarm contractors, fire suppression system contractors, and portable fire extinguisher service dealers. Many jurisdictions in Washington require or prefer technicians with NICET (National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies) certification at Level II or higher for inspection work. Companies must also maintain general liability insurance and workers' compensation coverage as required by state law.

Inspection Frequency Requirements

Washington follows NFPA standards for fire protection system inspection frequencies. Fire sprinkler systems require quarterly visual inspections and annual comprehensive inspections per NFPA 25, with 5-year internal inspections for certain system types.
