In New York City, the FDNY Bureau of Fire Prevention serves as the primary regulatory authority with its own separate code and licensing requirements.

Licensing Requirements

New York fire protection licensing requirements vary significantly between New York City and the rest of the state. In NYC, fire protection contractors must hold specific FDNY permits and certificates of fitness. Outside NYC, fire protection work is typically regulated through the general contractor licensing framework of each municipality. NICET certification is widely required throughout the state, particularly by insurance carriers and code officials. New York City requires specific FDNY Certificates of Fitness for fire alarm system inspection and testing, sprinkler system maintenance, and other fire protection activities.

Inspection Frequency Requirements

New York follows NFPA standards for inspection frequencies as adopted in the Fire Code of New York State (or NYC Fire Code in the five boroughs). Fire sprinkler systems require quarterly visual and annual inspections per NFPA 25. Fire alarm systems require annual inspection per NFPA 72.
