Fire Inspection Requirements in California

The California State Fire Marshal's Office, operating under CAL FIRE (California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection), oversees fire protection system licensing, code enforcement, and fire safety throughout California. The OSFM manages contractor licensing through the Contractors State License Board (CSLB) for fire protection specialties and directly regulates fire extinguisher and automatic extinguishing system servicing.

Licensing Requirements

California requires fire protection contractors to hold appropriate licenses from the Contractors State License Board (CSLB). Key license classifications include C-16 (Fire Protection) for fire sprinkler systems, C-10 (Electrical) for fire alarm systems, and C-16 for suppression systems. Fire extinguisher service requires a separate license from the State Fire Marshal's Office. NICET certification is widely recognized and increasingly required by California AHJs. All contractors must maintain a minimum $15,000 contractor bond, carry general liability insurance, and provide workers' compensation coverage.

Inspection Frequency Requirements

California follows NFPA standards for fire protection system inspections as adopted in the California Fire Code (Title 24, Part 9). Fire sprinkler systems require quarterly visual inspections and annual comprehensive inspections per NFPA 25. Fire alarm systems require annual inspection per NFPA 72. Kitchen hood suppression systems require semi-annual inspection per NFPA 17A/96. Fire extinguishers require annual inspection per NFPA 10. California's seismic requirements add additional inspection considerations for sprinkler system bracing and hangers. Many California jurisdictions require inspection reports to be filed with the local fire department.
